Timber Rafting on the river Klarälven in Sweden
Overview
Using nothing but logs and ropes, you will build your own 6m x 3m timber raft and sail her down the wide and meandering Klarälven through the forests of Värmland in western Sweden, camping wild along the way. A fishing licence can be bought for the length of the route. This experience is ideal for active families, groups of friends or Scout groups. We also offer a premium version of this experience which is an excellent corporate team-building activity.
Additional information
You will receive full instruction in the techniques required before being transferred to the start point to begin constructing your raft. When she is ready, you will set sail for your voyage, spending 3 or 6 nights on the river depending on the route chosen. The Klarälven flows at a stately 2kph through an attractive forested rural area and there are a number of small villages to stop at and explore along the way. Standard package includes all necessary equipment and instruction for building your raft, local transfer, kitchen equipment with Trangia-style stove, fuel, and utensils. It is possible to hire a canoe (recommended to give you greater freedom and flexibility during the tour), tents and sleeping bag packages as optional extras.
Why go timber rafting on the Klarälven?
Timber rafting is a unique experience - a real outdoor adventure and an excellent exercise in teamwork. Floating peacefully downstream is only part of the experience. Building and piloting the raft can be physically demanding. It is not necessary to be especially strong, but it is important to work together. Along the way you will need to learn the ways of the river to negotiate twists and turns, and keep an eye out for obstacles such as sandbanks and backwaters!
All our partners in Sweden are small, local companies certified by the Swedish Ecotourism Society for their commitment to high standards of environmental practice and safety and the provider of this experience was a finalist in the TRIP Global Awards for the best tourist experience in Sweden 2008.
